How to get featured
New games show up almost, if not daily in the Spotlight section of Arcade tab. These games are hand-picked, but there are many factors to increase the chances of being selected.
These things should generally be avoided in a game:
- Copyright violations. Do not copy sprites or levels from a game you did not make. Replicating a level is fine, so long as design and scripts are changed in a way that is different enough.
- Impossible difficulty. Titles such as "hard", "impossible", "kaizo", or "troll" make it less likely for featuring.
- No blood and/or gore. The game should be playable for any ages if a feature is the goal.
- Game collections. A game should stick to its fundamental idea.
- Orientation lock. A game should not stick to portrait or landscape only. It should work both ways.
- Box art level. This is a looser criteria, and such games have been featured.
- Text. The featured games are mostly non-verbal, relying on the mind's intuition, so as to be accessible to everyone. However, English text might be useful as a supplement.
Then, the interesting things you should consider, which are probably harder:
- Simple controls. One-tap, swipe, drag and tilt all work well on touch screens. There are many other options, but try to make it clear what the player is supposed to do.
- Easy difficulty. For instance, puzzles will often look harder to the solver, than it is to the setter. Start with introductory levels, increasing with difficulty later on.
- Make it look good. Use the retro style to your advantage. Experiment with the limited colour palette.
- If it's a level-based game, add enough content.
